#466

We start in Finnish (pun intended) territory with a track from Misha Panfilov's fantastic 2025 album To Blue From Grey In May on Ultraaani. Listeners know we ride for their catalog. Peep episode #454 for Isach Skeidsvoll's powerful "Dance To Summon" or search the archives for more.
One of the oddest records I've heard recently: Pekka Airaksinen's "Sukirti" off his album Buddhas of Golden Light. Recorded straight to tape over the course of a week in 1984 using a Roland 808, Yamaha DX7, and his homie improvising on the sax. It's like belly dance Atari jazz on LSD. Absolutely wild!
A quick run of West African heat follows: Orlando Julius with The Heliocentrics, Nigerian funk heavyweights Blo, and one of my personal favorites off the Syliphone label, Balla et Ses Balladins out of Guinea with "Samba". An unexpected detour with The Butthole Surfers, The Slits, and Au Pairs before jumping to Bill Callahan's "Lonely City," the second single from his 2026 album My Days of 58.
The homie and shop regular, Heisenlo steps up and represents for all the Boludos in the spot. A track from Soda Stereo's 96 MTV Unplugged performance, recorded here in Miami. Esthero, Yussef Kamaal, and a Cuban percussion run through Patato & Totico, Manteca, and the closer, the powerful "Jibaro/My Pretty Nigger" by Eddie Palmieri's Harlem River Drive, delivered beautifully by Felipe Luciano, a Puerto Rican American activist and journalist.
Robbie takes it somewhere else entirely, as he always does, by starting things off with a triangle offense of British folk tunes from Pentangle, Vashti Bunyan, and Steeleye Span, before Stone Garden patron saint Bo Hansson shows up to the party. Goat and Danger Doom shut it down.
skillits drops in with a heavy focus on the artists we saw perform at Big Ears 2026 in Knoxville. Side note: for anyone who enjoys the music we play here, we cannot recommend Big Ears enough. Speaking of Big Ears, 2026 alumni Tara Clerkin Trio shine with the infectious "In Spring". Plenty of ground is covered before we land on the full 3-part version of Millie Jackson's stone-cold classic "If Loving You is Wrong." That monologue feels like the real thing. She brings it home with The Frightnrs' sublime take on "I'd Rather Go Blind" on Daptone and The Ironsides on Colemine. Tight and well-shaped.
KEMS batting clean up and he clears the bases as usual. He throws down MF DOOM's "Valerian Root" from his Special Herbs, Vol. 5 & 6 before taking a hard left into Scratch Acid and the Reatards, then comes back through Roscoe Mitchell, another Big Ears 2026 highlight, before rounding it out with Darius Jones and Pat Thomas. Thomas is the pianist for UK-based modern free jazz stewards [Ahmed], who appear on a few shows — episode 454 is definitely a highlight. Rawkus one-two punch to close it out via Pharoahe Monch and Company Flow. DJ Krush feat. Shawn J. Period on Mo Wax sends everyone home.
