#467

rap79 opens in classic ATC fashion, easing in with Danny Scott Lane and Robert Wyatt before Broadcast's "Answer" and The Sound's epic 10-minute "Dark New Age" set the tone. The set moves through free jazz with some of Frank Wright's best work, "One For John" on BYG, a tribute to his mentor John Coltrane. ATC Radio is no stranger to Trane tributes — The Descendants of Mike and Phoebe's "Coltrane" on Strata-East turns up on episode 215 and Billy Gault's "Mode for Trane" on Inner City on episode 422.
Things start to get genuinely strange with ATC darling and creative powerhouse Valentina Magaletti, The Dwarfs of Agouza featuring Maurice Louca, and The Pop Group's "How Much Longer" on Rough Trade.
Then comes the left turn in your dripping candy-paint Cadillac nobody sees coming: Paul Wall's "Sittin' Sidewayz," a deep-cut remix from Bay Area indie rap legends the Hieroglyphics crew, and a jewel from The Roots' deep catalog featuring fellow Philadelphia rap legend Bahamdia.
The closer, and rap79's middle school crush, comes from Toni Braxton's "Another Sad Love Song." If you peeked through the window you could see me singing along.
KEMS teleports in with "Acknowledgement / Resolution" by the John Coltrane Quartet. Captured live in France in 1965 and recently released for Record Store Day 2026. A genuinely incredible document of one of the greatest bands in the history of recorded music doing exactly what they do. Light work with a quick round of Techno Animal, Ultramagnetic MC's, and the always intriguing Sun Ra before settling into a deep run. Francisco Mora Jr., Sahib Shihab, Large Professor's "Key To The City" remix on Fat Beats, BadBadNotGood, Flying Lotus. We definitely champion the raps on ATC Radio and "good hustle" is one of many gems from R.A.P. Ferreira & Kenny Segal's 2025 release The Night Green Side of It. Go buy it.
He closes it out with a killer reggae version of War's seminal classic "Slipping Into Darkness" by Carl Bert & The Cimarons. Never properly released when it was recorded in 1974, French label Hornin' Sounds did a limited reissue in 2020. Thee Oh Sees closes it out. Free form radio has never been freer.
