ATC returns after a tech (no bro) related hiatus last week with episode #471 and close to 4 hours of another all-vinyl selection from KEMS and rap79. Serving up jams ranging across jazz, hip-hop, soul, dub, post-punk, and sounds from around the globe.
KEMS opens with the smoking "Batuki" via the RSD 2026 reissue of Buster Williams' Muse debut, "Pinnacle". The type of jazz records that littered the used bins 20 years ago but have now become IG jazz bro grails. We live in an era where records once held in the Gollum clutch of collectors are available to mere mortals, and we are here for it.
I digress. We proceed to bob and weave through tracks by KRS-One, the Koichi Matsukaze Trio, Ornette Coleman, Skyzoo, and Prefuse 73 before we end up at KEMS' Saturday afternoon record room dance party. We get Patrice Rushen's stone cold classic "Haven't You Heard" from her 1979 album, "Pizzazz", which, for the sample hounds, is the basis for Zhané's "Groove Thang". Danny Brown closes out this run with "Grown Up", something neither of us have managed to do.
The back half kicks off with a run of roots and dub 45s featuring tracks by Rockers All-Stars on Rough Trade, Errol Holt, and Jah Creation. The Aggravators go off with a dub of Johnnie Clarke's tough as nails "Don't Trouble Trouble" on Jackpot. The mix of sub bass and the sound of echoed, rapid fire gunshots on the intro lets you know this is indeed ruffer.
We roll through Motor City Drum Ensemble, Joy Division, Cleaners From Venus, and the Eraldo Volonte Quartet, closing out with Ayalew Mesfin. Last call rolls up with Gloria Ann Taylor's spiced up cover of "Jolene".
